New Penguins Arena : Consol Center nhl

Last night was the start of the second season of Hockey, better known as the playoffs. Playoff Hockey carries an intensity that is rarely matched by any sport. It’s incredibly entertaining and it pains me to think about how low hockey’s popularity with main stream society has dipped. That being said, the featured game was the Pittsburgh Penguins vs the Philadelphia Flyers, two cities where hockey is still very much alive. Pittsburgh is playing in the oldest building in Hockey, the Mellon Arena. That will change however come 2010 when Pittsburgh will complete it’s complete city overhaul of stadium infrastructure (Heinz Field , PNC Park and Peterson Center). The Consol Energy Center is currently being constructed next to Mellon arena. This arena promised to have all the bells and whistles of all the other arena’s built in the last 10 years. A two tier seating bowl, 2000 club seats, restaurants, loge boxes etc. The exterior and interior looks pretty decent, but I wouldn’t say this is cutting edge architecture. While being located near downtown Pittsburgh Mellon area neighborhood lacked identity. A connecting hotel is also in the works, hopefully a sign of things to come. Hopefully by 2010 the economy will be back to normal, bars and restaurants will start opening up again and they will locate here, next to the new Consol Center in Pittsburgh.

Update: I was in Pittsburgh and just had to drive by to see what sort of progress was being made. You can completely see how the stadium is shaping up. I was told that there are going to be 66 suits. The area has one more thing going for it that I originally gave it credit. Duquesne University is located on a bluff that will over look the new arena. This will be a better situation that the current area which backs against the less and desirable Hill District.
